Adult Film Star Joanna Angel Reveals How She ‘Broke the Internet’ with Controversial Zombie Porn Film

Veteran adult star Joanna Angel claims she achieved viral fame with one of her initial films, which was so explicit that it faced a worldwide ban.

In one of her earliest productions, Joanna Angel decided to create a Halloween special featuring fake blood, zombies, and explicit sexual content. The 20-minute film, titled “Re-Penetrator,” propelled her to stardom, earning her the first AVN award for “most outrageous scene” and kick-starting a successful 21-year career in the adult film industry. However, the film received mixed reactions.

One of the most explicit scenes portrayed Joanna, playing a zombie character, awakening on a mortician’s table and engaging in passionate activity while violently dismembering her partner. According to Joanna’s account on a recent Pillow Talk podcast, the scene involved using an enormous amount of fake blood, equivalent to “six fire extinguishers’ worth.” She described the scene, stating, “I’m like pulling his intestines out and there’s blood squirting out everywhere … and then I guess at the end he’s dead and I try to f*** him. We shot in this very big loft [with] very high ceilings and there was actually blood on the ceiling.”

The scene, intended as a Halloween special, was released in mid-October 2002 and generated immediate controversy. Joanna referred to it as the moment that “broke the internet,” explaining, “The website actually did break … it literally broke the internet.” The film attracted significant attention, with horror magazines and other publications such as Fangoaria reaching out to her. She recalled the overwhelming response, saying, “We got tons and tons and tons of traffic, you know, people are calling me from Fangoaria and all these horror magazines … it was crazy.”

While the clip became a viral sensation, it soon faced challenges. Joanna received an email from the credit card processor stating that the film violated numerous rules, including those related to necrophilia and explicit blood scenes.

Joanna was taken aback when the company decided to remove the film from its website. She had self-funded the production with approximately $9,000 earned from her work as a stripper. Fortunately, after pleading with the credit card company, they agreed to overlook the violations until after Halloween. “Re-Penetrator” gained millions of fans during its two-week availability. Following its removal, Joanna received numerous complaints from disgruntled customers wondering what had happened to the zombie porn.

To this day, bootleg DVDs of the clip can be found at shows, but Joanna doesn’t mind as she stated, “I didn’t really care like about the piracy of it because I just wanted the movie to exist.” Over 20 years later, she continues to thrive in the industry, having given up studio ownership to focus more on performing, her first love.

Occasionally, Joanna receives calls from curious academics seeking assistance with research on the legendary “zombie porn” movie “Repenetrator.”
