Turkey Implements Nationwide Ban on OnlyFans Over Morality Concerns

Turkey has blocked access to the popular adult subscription site OnlyFans throughout the entire country. This action follows a campaign by conservative groups who have voiced their concerns over the platform’s promotion of pornography. The country’s leaders have supported these moral concerns, leading to the imminent implementation of the ban.

Although the Turkish government has not officially announced the ban, local reports indicate that access to OnlyFans is already being prohibited. Users attempting to visit the site are now met with warning messages stating that the connection is “no longer secure.”

The ban came about as a result of a petition calling for the prohibition of OnlyFans and similar platforms, claiming that they encourage the pursuit of money through immoral means. The petitioner, whose identity remains unknown, submitted the petition to the Turkish government, urging them to take decisive action to safeguard public morals and the traditional Turkish family structure.

Social media users in Turkey have taken to platforms like Twitter to discuss the ban. Some have suggested that even with the ban in place, individuals in the country could still access OnlyFans using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

OnlyFans, founded in 2016 and headquartered in London, is an online subscription platform primarily known for hosting adult content created by sex workers and models. Users must be at least 18 years old to sign up and typically pay a monthly membership fee to access exclusive content such as live streams, photos, and videos from their favorite creators.

Concerns have been raised in the past about OnlyFans’ ability to monitor the age of its subscribers effectively. Critics, including groups like Internet Matters, have pointed out potential gaps in the platform’s age verification process. In response, OnlyFans introduced a new account verification process in 2019, requiring creators to submit a selfie and identification documents to set up an account. The platform has vowed to investigate and suspend accounts if alerted to underage individuals attempting to gain unauthorized access.

Turkey is not the first country to ban OnlyFans, as several other nations have taken similar actions. Dubai, known for its strict policies against adult content, has blocked access to the platform since its inception. Russia also banned access to OnlyFans earlier this year, citing the platform’s “immoral” content. India allows access to the site but prohibits individuals from posting sexual content as creators due to the country’s legislation. In Belarus, the government has blocked access to OnlyFans in the past, labeling its content as “anti-social,” although accessing the site itself remains legal.

As the ban on OnlyFans takes effect in Turkey, it remains to be seen how users and creators within the country will adapt to the restricted access.
